Belek in Brief
Belek Tourism Investors Union (Betuyab) was established in 1989 by the tourism investors getting their first assignments, in accordance with the assignment provision that is made as the preliminary condition of the final assignment and that stipulates being a member to the union / institution / establishment to be founded obligatory, with the aim of solving the infrastructure problems in Belek Tourism Center with the cooperation of Public - Private Sector. Later, the establishments getting their assignments have become a member / partner to the Union in question in accordance with the same final assignment preliminary condition.
The union has been founded as a limited company in order to form a more dynamic structure and due to some deficiencies of the law regarding foundation of a union. Later in 1991, the status of the firm has been changed into a joint stock company, within the knowledge of Turkish Republic Ministry of Tourism. Number of partners of the firm is 32 as of 27.08.2001.
After the completion of infrastructure and superstructure, three main duties of Betuyab has been formed as a base. These are determined as introduction, struggle with Mosquitoes, houseflies, and sand flies and environment activities.
CURRENT INFRASTRUCTURE: DRINKING WATER: Drinking water source of the area is Boztepe Tigem farm. 445 lt/sec very good quality drinking water, from 5 wells as 3 100 lt/sec, 1 80 lt/sec and 1 65 lt/sec, is pumped to the 5 drinking water depots of 3000 ton capacity in the area.
PURIFICATION PLANTS: The 1st purification plant in the region has 30.000 person-capacity and the 2nd purification plant has 40.000 person-capacity. Both municipalities in the region (Belek and Kadriye municipalities) connect to these purification plants.
ROAD: The roads are total 45,5 km long and are made as surface coating by the 13th Area Directorate of Turkish Republic Highways. After the negotiations made with Turkish Republic Ministry of Tourism and Antalya governorship, the road from Belek turnoff to the place where gendarme station is located on the Antalya-Alanya road is being coated as hot asphalt.
ELECTRIFICATION: 1/3 of the energy investment of the region has been made by Turkish Republic Ministry of Tourism, 1/3 of it by Kepez A.Ş. and 1/3 of it by Kepez A.Ş. on condition to be paid by Betuyab and energy requirement of the plants and road illuminations have been provided. Established power is 55.000 Kw/hour.
TELECOMMUNICATION: Telephone exchange buildings and telecommunication investment forming from fiber optic lines have been provided by the Post Telegraph and Telephone Company, again on condition that 1/3 to be met by the Post Telegraph and Telephone Company, 1/3 by Turkish Republic Ministry of Tourism and 1/3 by Betuyab. 25 lines have been given to each plant.
INTERVENTION TO FOREST FIRE - WIRELESS RADIO NETWORK: Fire hydrants, which have been placed inside the forest with the aim of intervention to the fire, have been made by Kalkınma Holding A.Ş. and taken into circulation. Later, power of the fire hydrants have been increased. In 1996, a fire intervention vehicle has been purchased and put into service. Again the same year, all plants have obtained the opportunity of immediate intervention to fire by taking an "Emergency Trunk System" radio wireless radio network system in connection with Forest Area Directorate, Gendarme and Betuyab. The forest has been surrounded with wire fences of 35 km long. The forest is tried to be taken under control by making entrance - exit doors.
Finally, fire-base of Fire Intervention Teams of Antalya Province Directorate of Ministry of Forestry has been made by Betuyab. The fire-base gives service to whole Antalya. There is 1 Helicopter, social units (dining hall, dormitory, etc.), settling units and settling units for pilots and managers in the fire-base.
ACTIVITIES OF BETUYAB
1)- INTRODUCTION Betuyab spends approximately
350.000 from its budget to this issue every year. The researches in this issue forms from participating in the local and foreign tourism fairs, giving declarations and advertisements to local and foreign newspapers, magazines, brochures and TVs, public relations and treating with respect the press members. In the last five years Betuyab has participated in Berlin, London, Moscow St. Petersburg, Vienna, Milan, Prague, Götebourg, Utrecht, Helsinki, Warsaw and Poznan tourism fairs, Incentive fair in Geneva, catalogue introduction fair in Frankfurt, Volvo PGA golf tournaments, which is one of the most important golf tournaments in the world, in Ventworth that is a place near London. Belek region has been introduced by organizing a Turkish week for 7 days in Tyumen city in West Siberia. Moreover, EMITT Istanbul has participated in Eastern Mediterranean international tourism fair with a big stand.
In addition to these introduction activities, contact has been made with 16.000 German and 700 Australian travel agency through infox channel as Betuyab during the crisis we faced in tourism 1999 and it has been stated that there was no difficulty in the issue of security in Turkey and that they could have holiday in Turkey like in other tourism centers. Moreover, about 60 German- 50 Russian well-known journalist, columnist and superior press establishment authority have been treated with respect as a guest in Belek region and they have been given the opportunity of making investigations freely. Thus, an environment has been created for them to tell that there aren't any difficulties in the issue of security in Antalya and Belek, and that they have spent a comfortable and peaceful holiday to their friends when they return to their countries.
2)- INTEGRATED STUDIES OF FIGHT WITH MOSQUITO - HOUSEFLY - SAND FLY
In 1999 with the cooperation of Turkish Republic Ministry of Tourism and Hacettepe University, integrated vector fight research project has been started against mosquitoes, houseflies and sand flies as pilot researches in Antalya and Belek, which are one of our most important tourism centers, within the scope of scientific research projects. The project has been completed in 1994.
Betuyab has been fighting with mosquitoes, houseflies and sand flies since 1994 with its own resources under the counseling of Hacettepe University. Chemical preparations have been started to be used since 1998 in the fight and by this way, it has been continued to pay care to the environment from the ecological aspect.
The field of struggle comprises an area of 270 km2. There are 589 barns, 1214 septic tanks, 4 swamps of about 18000 acres, 10.000 acres pasture, 56.775 drainage channels, 150.000 m. irrigation channel, 3 municipalities and 14 settling areas. Betuyab spends approximately DM 600.000 from its budget to this issue every year. In this struggle application, only 4% of the application field is the responsibility field of Belek Investors. 96% of it is the authority and responsibility area of the public institutions and establishments. However, Betuyab performs all the fight on its own.
The expenditure projected for this activity in our 2001 budget is DM 497.000. As a result of the fight made in the area, mosquito population has decreased in a rate of 80-85% in five years.
Belek Tourism Investors Union (Betuyab) is one of the few establishments that give the due importance and care to the environment and nature as a private sector establishment. Environment sensitivity and scientific based studies are always given primary importance in every project realized in Belek Tourism Center.
Projects have been created as a simulative integrated implementation model to be applied to the areas that have climate and ecology characteristics similar to this region, in the light of the scientific data formed according to the results of the scientific research made between 1989-1994.
BELEK - 2000 project comprises 52 subtitle and activities and publications about these under 7 main titles with the name of Nature and Eco-Tourism Activities, Cultural Activities, Sports and entertainment Activities, Infrastructure Investments, Esthetic Arrangements, Biological control against insects, Congress and Training centers.
BIOLOGICAL DIVERSITY CONTROL AND ECO TOURISM ACTIVITIES
Flora and fauna variety inventories of Belek Tourism Center has been made with the counseling service received from the universities. Some of these projects that have been realized with the available insufficient resources have made Belek Tourism Center win international awards. Belek Tourism Investors Union (Betuyab) has come in second in 115 projects that have participated from 41 countries in Europe in the "Tourism for Tomorrow Awards" international environment and tourism competition of British Airways.
Environment Projects in Belek Tourism Center have won the competition of world's most successful projects and projects to be taken as a model, realized by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs. The studies are published as reference project (page 40-41) in "Sustainable Development, Success Stories, Volume 3" of the establishment.

by Turkey Environmental Education Foundation. Betuyab has been awarded a
Certificate of Acknowledgement in 1999 due to the activities it performs.
Besides the studies being performed in a way very careful to the environment, formation of Useful Association studies are continuing. Resource transfer is aimed from international finance institutions in this issue. Moreover, results of environment projects given to some foreign institutions and establishments in the issue of environment are expected.
WORK TO BE DONE FROM NOW ON FOR BELEK TOURISM CENTER
The primary work to be done in the region is to increase the quality of Belek Tourism Product. In order to realize this, it is necessary to increase the holiday experience quality of the tourist. Tourism Product comprises many elements. We can summarize them as follows:
- Infrastructure: Travel organization, road, water, electric, communication, purification, transportation The satisfaction level of the tourist, in other words the quality of holiday experience, is directly proportional to the service quality each of these elements reach. Therefore, the necessary thing to do is to take into account and develop the product within the circle of local environment - area - country - world and to increase the quality of all elements with the approach of Total Quality Management of the product.
Because, the quality of holiday experience of a tourist is totally related with the things he/she has lived from the beginning to the end of his/her travel. The separate qualities of these then form the total quality. To express more concretely, in case the hotel has five stars, personnel has two stars, streets, sidewalks and cultural values have one star, carpet seller, souvenir seller has zero star, it is obvious that total holiday experience of the customer shall be very less than five stars.
It is a well known fact that the landscape, structural and social development in Turkey in the areas and settlements, where tourism facilities are dense, are in a continuous quality erosion, despite the bed capacity has increased in the last few years. Protecting this balance in all the activities, performed as Betuyab, is determined as the main aim. Betuyab shall continue its studies with this principle and with discipline.
In this project, Betuyab has taken up for one more time some important tourism product elements within the above mentioned total quality management principle and has prepared a project to make them elements with five stars appropriate to five-star facilities.
